ONE AND ONLY ONE: MOBREIMOB ZINE!

One and Only One: MobReiMob Zine! is a non-profit fanzine that was organized on Twitter and Discord by bard, Sunni and Rose. Bard opened an interest check poll in December 16, 2022 that received over 200 answers. The interest check results showed a high interest in the project, with the poll participants being slightly more inclined towards a digital release. People wanted both SFW and NSFW pieces to be featured, and due to a divisive response to "dead dove" and "shota" content being allowed in the zine, an optional sister zine became part of the project that would host the darker pieces. Mod applications were opened in February 1, and mods Rose and Sunni were announced two weeks later. Artist and writer applications opened on February 20. I applied to the zine immediately, but shockingly, I ended up being extended an invitation to it! I never thought I'd be a guest in a zine. Guest members were announced from February 28 to March 8, and applications for the zine ended on March 21. Contributors were publicly announced on April 17. Piece pitches were due April 5, and pieces were worked on from that day until July 25, with an extention for those who needed it (like myself) to August 1. Previews of the contributors' pieces began trickling out on the zine's Twitter account from August 21 to October 8.

The zine was released on September 30 on archiveofourown as a series containing two volumes: the main zine, One and Only One, and the "hardcore" sister zine, Spirits & Such After Dark. The zine's focus is the ship mobreimob, and is sectioned by ship order: pieces focusing on mobrei, pieces with a reversible reading, and pieces focusing on reimob. The sister zines are forty-three and seventeen chapters long respectively (with the collaborator-exclusive PDF versions being 200 and 107 pages), with forty-two contributors, both artists and writers, that created a total of 69 pieces. Nice.

Such an informative page! The blessings of making my archive page while the project is still alive.

I'm very happy to have been able to participate in a mobreimob zine that got released, which in my time of working on MP100 zines has happened less often than I'd hope for. This is my favorite ship in the world, and I've dedicated hundreds of drawings to it. I was able to be in a zine with a writer I love and draw an illustration for his work. There were unfortunately a lot of ups and downs during the time between final submission of our pieces and zine release. The zine was originally announced as a for-profit project, which was one of the reasons I joined. I'm not interested in doing free labor for zines unless it's a project between friends. Sadly, because of issues with the planned selling platform and payment options, the mods later felt like there was too much of a risk to sell the zine, as both regular and hardcore zines contained R18 works of the pair. Despite a lot of suggestions from collaborators, the final decision was to make the zine a free release. The solution the mods gave was to link to collaborators' pages on the Twitter account, where readers could support them financially if they wished. If you like my pieces, I'd really appreciate if you checked out my goods index, where you can find links to my tip jar, physical and digital goods, commission info, and other such things. You can even buy these illustrations as prints or stickers!

Below are the entries I submitted to the zine. One companion illustration for a story by another artist, and one solo illustration.

ONE AND ONLY ONE ENTRY

six one way, half a dozen the other - companion piece [AO3 archive]

Mob Psycho 100 fan art. A drawing divided in three main vertical sections, featuring Mob, a man with black hair in a bowl-cut hairdo that casts harsh shadows over his eyes wearing an office suit, and Arataka, a boy with light short hair wearing a middle school uniform. In the first scene, Mob and Arataka sit at a table, facing each other. Arataka excitedly holds a spoon to his face, his cheerfulness visualized in a halo of brightness around his head. Mob stares at him, hunching and apprehensive, one hand held up as if to reach towards the boy. They're surrounded by frilly curtains, heart ornaments and cherub teddy bears. In the second scene, Mob's hand reaches forward, coming out of frame with an exaggerated perspective and surrounded by explosive power. He looks serious, somewhat intimidating, and he holds Arataka close to his chest with a protective arm around the boy's shoulders. Both their hair and Mob's necktie fly in the wind, an aura surrounding both characters. Arataka is wearing a hoodie. In the third scene, Mob's and Arataka's hands are the focus of the frame, held firmly together. Two smaller circle frames show Mob's and Arataka's faces. Mob looks at Arataka from the corner of his eyes, a tiny smile on his face. Arataka looks nervous, squeezing his eyes closed. The drawing is surrounded by a wavy ribbon frame that begins at the top, coming out of a cherub teddy bear holding a bow and arrow, and ends at the bottom of the drawing tied in a bow with a heart in the middle. The ribbon loops around in the third scene to make the frames of both face close-ups described above. The drawing is signed as SPILLINGDOWN.

An illustration for fantos' story, six one way, half a dozen the other. It's a wonderful ageswap AU one-shot describing Mob and Arataka's bumpy first meeting and bumpy first adventure together. I wanted to focus on different aspects of the story, so I thought dividing the illustration in various panels would work best. I didn't want the stiffness of the rectangle shape, so instead I used the looseness of the ribbon to make the frame a bit more dynamic, and while I stuck to the three-row order still viewable in the sketches below, I played around with the space to make the three main scenes merge into each other. I had a lot of fun with textures and line weight, and I hope dear fantos is as pleased with this drawing as I am.

I added this person into my wishlist for who I'd like to see on the zine in my application, and was very pleased to find out that he'd seen the zine application and had decided to give it a go. Being next to this person in the zine was a dream goal and despite everything, I'm very happy it happened.

Below are some process sketches found in the file's hidden layers.

SPIRITS & SUCH AFTER DARK ENTRY

Taste 🔞🥩 [AO3 archive]

Mob Psycho 100 fan art. An illustration with various scenes loosely arranged to show a story involving Mob, a young man with black hair in a bowl-cut hairdo that casts harsh shadows on his face, wearing a black v-neck t-shirt, jeans and sneakers, and Reigen, an older man with light short hair wearing an office suit. Scene 1: Mob uses his index finger to pull Reigen's neckline down unceremoniously, leaning in to sniff at his neck. Reigen is taken by surprise by the act. Scene 2: Mob stops Reigen from walking by grabbing him by the arm with his free hand, pressing his nose to Reigen's nape. Reigen looks back at him in confusion, loosening his tie. Scene 3: Mob grabs on to Reigen's shoulders, starting to sweat. He stares at Reigen with wide eyes. Reigen begins to worry, shown in his nervous smile. Scene 4: Mob has turned Reigen around to face him directly, gripping Reigen's arms with too much strength. He seems to grow in size, back bulgign. He stares into Reigen's eyes, sweaty and panting, face obscured in harsh shadows. Reigen looks distressed now, holding his hands up in a calming motion. Scene 5: Mob pulls Reigen close to his body, leaning down with his mouth wide open and his tongue lolling out, ready to take a bite off Reigen's shoulder, bulging veins on his arms and neck. Scene 6: A panther leans over Reigen, biting him square in the face. Blood splatters in every direction, some drops in the shape of hearts. Reigen only paws at the animal's neck helplessly. Mob's face is superimposed over the panther's black fur, an angry expression on his face, mouth open in a growl. Scene 7: a sweaty, grimacing Mob reaches towards Reigen with a clawed hand. Arranged below in a mirroring pose, Reigen leans stares back at Mob, his mouth agape in pain. Reigen's face and neck are missing chunks of flesh and he is bleeding profusely. Scene 8: Mob holds a limp Reigen in his arms, looking shocked and confused as he stares at Reigen's bloody face. There's blood stains around Mob's lips. Surrounding this drawing are six smaller, simpler drawings of the characters retelling the same story: Mob follows Reigen with a strange attentiveness, a black furry tail standing up in alert. From the tip of the tail comes a ray of hearts that turn into a bleeding arrow, the trail o blood connecting to a flurry of hearts coming out of Mob's head, who now aggressively holds Reigen as he burns holes on the man with his stare. One of the hearts drips down and hits Mob in the head, splashing hearts all around him as he tips Reigen down in his arms and takes a hearty bite of his neck, making Reigen grimace in pain. One of the splashing hearts bounces and turns into an arrow stuck in the back of a panther that holds on to Reige with large clawed paws as it gnaws on his head. Blood spills all over, turning into a puddle below the two that flows onto panther-Mob's back, staining his furred body. Mob comes out of his feeding trance as a weakened Reigen reaches up to touch his cheek with one hand. A red trail comes out of Reigen's head, wobbly reaching the final pair of Mob and Reigen as a winged heart with a halo that surrounds the pair as Mob helplessly holds Reigen's unresponsive body.

This illustration was very hard to figure out. I didn't want to focus on just one idea, so I figured I could draw various scenes surrounding the same idea. Sounds easy, right? Wrong. I spent so long figuring out which poses I wanted to keep and which didn't fit, and how to rearrange every element so the black and white spaces felt balanced. I'm not totally convinced I made the right choices and there's things I wish I had done a little bit differently, but I do enjoy looking at this drawing, so that's a win.

Oh, you wanted an explanation? I guess Reigen smelled too delicious and Mob couldn't help himself. Don't be a glutton!

You can buy this as a print or as a sticker set! Head over to the store section of the site for more info.
