PAKIGE 2: THINGS THAT GO BUMP (& GRIND) IN THE NIGHT

PAKIGE 2: Things That Go Bump (& Grind) In The Night is a digital and physical fanzine privately organized, created and released among the members of a tokusatsu-focused Discord server. This is the second edition of this celebratory zine, for the third anniversary of the server. This time, the theme of the zine was vaguely spooky. The zine is not available to the public, but you can find some of the pieces in the archiveofourown collection that some of the contributors chose to share.

Below are the entries I submitted to the zine. I created four illustrations for the zine, and a spur of the moment illustration that ended up being used as a back cover. These illustrations have been included in the AO3 collection in a single chaptered work, which you can find here.

My submissions

FIRST PIECE

Ryuki (Yui & Shiro) [AO3 archive]

Kamen Rider Ryuki fan art. Yui, a woman with short hair wearing a turtleneck and a jacket, stands before a window. She stares at her reflection with a resolute face, eyebrows furrowed and lips pressed together. She reaches to the window with her right hand, her fingertips pressed to it, as if reaching for the reflection. In the shadows behind her reflection stands her brother Shiro, a man taller than she is, with hair long enough to partially obscure his eyes and wearing a shirt, a jacket and a coat. He stares at the back of her head, wearing his usual grim expression. The window's frame draws an askew cross on the picture.

First piece for the zine. The theme for this anniversary celebration was "things that go bump (and grind) in the night". I went with a less sexy approach for my entries, focusing on the creepy aspect of the tagline instead. My first draft for this idea involved Shinji and Mirror Shinji but I ended up sketching a bunch of Kanzaki siblings instead.

SECOND PIECE

Hibiki (Asumu & Hibiki-san) [AO3 archive]

Kamen Rider Hibiki fan art. There are three separate layers on the image. A young boy wearing a shirt and a jacket, Asumu, stands in the foreground of the image, looking around as if lost as he holds up a compass. Behind him is the shadowed shape of the oni Hibiki, a faceless horned being, his muscled right arm moving up as he holds a drumstick in his jagged clawed hands, beating a drum just out of view. The third layer, the background, shows the forest they're both in, the dark trees in high contrast against the sky.

I love Kamen Rider Hibiki so I tried my best to combine the mood of the show with the mood of the zine's theme. The original work might not be aiming for a scary vibe, but the idea of encountering an oni in the woods can lend itself to scary readings right?

You can buy a color version of this illustration! Head over to my store page for more info.

THIRD PIECE

OOO (Ankh) [AO3 archive]

Kamen Rider OOO fan art. A picture of Ankh, a creature hiding inside a human body with hair long enough to curl outwardly, parted sidewise from the left side of his head. He hides behind the curls that partially obscure his face and his monstrous hand, which has long pointy nails on his index and middle finger and large claws on the rest on the rest. Ankh's left eye peeps between his index and middle fingers (both donning rings), making direct eye contact with the viewer. His thin eyebrows are furrowed into a desperate expression. Delicate straight lines of light point out from his shining pupil, connecting with the pattern of peacock feathers surrounding Ankh, their pupil-like spots all pointing towards him as if they were unblinking eyes staring him down.

It's a little less direct than the other illustrations, but this is meant to be an Ankh and Eiji drawing. The way the show depicted Ankh's fears together with Eiji's transformation under the influence of the medals was so striking to me, I wanted to put that kind of atmosphere into a drawing. I'm not sure I succeeded but I enjoyed figuring this drawing out.

You can buy a print of a color version of this illustration on my store or on my INPRNT page!

FOURTH PIECE

Zi-O (SouWoz) [AO3 archive]

Kamen Rider Zi-O fan art. Sougo lies face up on the dining room's chaise lounge. Above him, Woz sits on the edge of the back of the couch, legs crossing over Sougo's torso to touch the floor. He leans down to look at Sougo, his hair obscuring his face. Woz's left hand sits on his left knee, his right hand slipping down to touch Sougo's thigh just out of frame. The end of Woz's scarf drapes over Sougo's shoulder, the tip resting next to his head. Sougo looks up at Woz, slightly flushed, lips parted. His right forearm rests on his forehead, hand in a loose fist. His left hand reaches for Woz's left hand, surrounding it.

I will never miss out on an opportunity to draw my OTP for a toku-related event lol. You can think of this as a screenshot re-draw of sorts (or maybe a déjà vu scenario) of that one Woz jumpscare in HeiGen Forever combined with The Nightmare by Henri Fuseli, which is a painting I always think of whenever I see that scene. Woz IS a little bit of a cryptid that goes bump in the night.

FIFTH PIECE

Zi-O (Woz) [AO3 archive]

Kamen Rider Zi-O fan art. A stylized drawing of Woz. He smiles at the viewer, holding a fork up on his right hand, and a dish with a large size of apple pie on his left. Text surrounds the drawing, first half of the sentence above Woz, second half below him. It reads 'A zine made with love as sweet as apple pie'.

Bonus piece. Something I whipped out to fill any blanks, ended up being the back cover of the zine. I have many thoughts about Woz's love for apple pie, maybe one day I will share them in writing.
